Germany’s Angela Merkel TIME’s Person of the Year
Time magazine has named German Chancellor Angela Merkel as its 2015 “Person of the Year”.
In its explanation of choosing Merkel as its “person of the year”, Time noted other European crises such as Russia’s annexation of Crimea.
Angela Merkel is the first woman to win the award outright in 29 years, and only the fourth woman since 1927 to be named the victor.
National security adviser of US President Barack Obama, Susan Rice, praised Merkel and said that “she has demonstrated particularly bold moral and practical leadership on the refugee crisis, welcoming vulnerable migrants despite the political costs”. “It would welcome refugees as casualties of radical Islamist savagery, not carriers of it. And it would deploy troops overseas in the fight against ISIS…You can agree with her or not, but she is not taking the easy road”. She is the first woman to be named a Chancellor in Germany, as well as leader of the Christian Democratic Union, a position she’s held since 2000.
The second factor justifying the award, although it might be bitterly contested in Greece, was Merkel’s handling of the euro crisis and her keeping the Greeks in the euro.
As to Trump’s previous critique that Time wouldn’t give him the honor, Gibbs said, “If he thinks he deserves it, he has the whole next year to let the voters decide that”. Third was Donald Trump. She was headstrong in dealing with the distress that her country has been facing in the last few months and was firm in her decision to help Syrian refugees who sought comfort and shelter in Germany.
However, while some people took to Twitter to congratulate Mrs Merkel, other’s poured scorn on Time’s choice.
And in 1999, Time picked the German-born Albert Einstein as Person of the Century.
The woman in question is the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel.
