The best, and the longest, set of the match was the second, which ran more than an hour, Djokovic failing seven times in the tiebreaker to follow an advantage and then losing it, 12-10, to Federer.
While Federer had more winners (58) than Djokovic (46), the Serb finished with only 16 unforced errors, compared to 35 for the Swiss player.
Djokovic is only 28 so has time on his side, especially as Federer is still a contender even at 33. “Night Fever came to life and you can imagine how that looked”. After a 20-minute rain delay at 3-2, Djokovic finished off the set.
There were tense moments for the champion when he had to recover from 0-30 at 4-3, seemingly angered by someone in the crowd, and he roared in their direction after holding serve.
Djokovics serve was stout, too: He saved six of seven break points.
Soon enough, Djokovic was crouching down to pluck a few blades of Centre Court grass and slide them in his mouth.
“Djokovic said today:” I suggested the idea to Serena and Philip Brook and they accepted it. I hoped that the tradition was not forgotten – I think Boris danced with Martina (Navratilova) – and so I was very pleased because Serena is a great dancer.
