Get Ready For Facebook’s Big ‘Like’ Button Change
The company initially began testing this update in Spain and Ireland, possibly to gain a better understanding of user preferences. Previously reported in October, Cox’s team created a final product of alternatives that Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg approved showing to the public.
With this array of emotions, used in the same way as the “Like” button, users can display an equal variety of feelings on posts, including amazement, anger, love and amusement.
Zuckerberg said Facebook’s engineers still need to make a few more “tweaks” before the new options are offered in other parts of the world.
The Like button has been Facebook’s most iconic feature since its inception.
The new reactions will include symbols for “angry”, “sad”, “wow”, “haha”, “yay” and “love”. In addition to bringing diversity, it will also allow users a more personalized interaction. This means Facebook can deliver more targeted ads to users based on their reactions to different posts.
However, Bloomberg Business says Facebook rejected the idea because it was considered too negative.
“Yay” was originally slated to be the sixth response although it was eliminated during testing as it wasn’t universally understood.
Users (on mobile devices) will be able to access these by long-pressing the like button, which will open a new popup with the so-called “Reactions”, each of which is accompanied by its own icon.
All the same, these new emoji will add a welcome range of new emotions that you can express on Facebook.
