Ghana seeks civil nuclear cooperation with India
President John Dramani Mahama, hosting Mukherjee, mooted the civil nuclear route as it is heavily dependent on gas from Nigeria that has of late been uncertain.
President Pranab Muhkherjee on Monday said the United Nations should be reformed to keep pace with world developments and pitched for India’s candidature for permanent seat on the Security Council.
President Mukherjee is also scheduled to address the Joint Business Forum and the University of Ghana and later unveil a statue of Mahatma Gandhi gifted by the Indian Council of Cultural Relations as well as plant a sapling at the Flag Staff House (Ghanaian Presidential Complex) – an iconic building built with Indian assistance through a Line of Credit. “I expect that already strong foundations of bilateral ties will be further consolidated and reinforced after the discussions between President Mukherjee and President Geingob, and cooperation in diverse areas will intensify”.
The president also praised the Government of Ghana for the giant strides it has made in strengthening democracy and in the upholding democratic values, and added that “the actual victory will belong to those who value democracy, plurality and inclusiveness”. Ghana is rich in minerals and exports more than 80 per cent gold to India.
Mukherjee said Indian private sector appreciates the peaceful, secure and stable environment of Ghana, which is a critical requirement for any investor.
On increasing investments by Indian companies in Ghana, the President said Indian business groups understand the potential and would be happy to invest if the right opportunities are given to them.
Referring to the new challenges that confront the global community, Mr. Mukherjee said the world order demands global governance structures that are consistent with these challenges. “India is in solidarity with you as you confront this challenge”.
“India, as a victim of terrorism for over three decades, shares your concern that this has become a global menace”. This banquet was hosted by the President of Ghana in the honor of the President of India.
President Pranab Mukherjee is on a three-nation tour to Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire and Namibia.
Describing Dr. Kwame Nkrumah as “a great son of Ghana and a visionary leader of Pan-Africanism”, Mr Mukherjee said he embodied Africa’s dignity, and inspired the peoples and the governments of African countries to claim their rightful place in global affairs.
