Giant pearl found by Fisherman 10yrs ago worth 76m
Valued at around $100 million, the pearl is estimated to be worth $65 million more than the pearl now listed in the books as the record holder, the Pearl of Allah, which was also found off Palawan, Philippines.
The priceless rock measures a staggering 1ft foot wide and 2.2 feet long – dwarfing the current world’s biggest Pearl of Allah which weighed 6.4kg and is worth $35million.
Puerto Princesa City Tourism Officer Aileen Cynthia Amurao explained that a fisherman found the specimen by accident after a typhoon in Palawan more than a decade ago.
Speaking of the new find, she said the fisherman had no idea what it was worth and made a decision to keep the huge pearl as a good luck charm.
According to city government officials in Puerto Princesa City, Philippines, a local fisher just dropped off this monster of a pearl to a local tourism office. This was a decade ago.
The tourism officer said they were amazed when the fisherman brought it to them and now they’re waiting for gemologists to fully certify this piece of treasure. We’re waiting for authentication from Gemologist Institute and other global authorities.
Also called the Pearl of Allah, it was also found in Palawan in 1934 and valued at USD35-million at an exhibition at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not!
It is now on exhibition at the Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in NY. “We will keep this here in the Philippines and I hope it will bring more tourists to the city”.
The gem was unveiled to the public for the first time today.
According to media reports, giant clams can grow to over four feet in length but rarely produce pearls which makes this find extremely rare, IBT reports.
