Giant Pumpkin “Squashes” North American Record
For the past couple years, McMullen has entered his giant pumpkins into the weighing competition of the annual Wine and Harvest Festival in Cedarburg.
One of Gene McMullen’s pumpkins tipped the scales this weekend at 2,145 pounds.
It’s the great pumpkin Charlie Brown.
“I don’t do anything different than any other growers do”, he told the Associated Press, crediting “dumb luck” to this giant’s success story.
Wisconsin is now home to the biggest pumpkin in North America.
According to the festival’s Facebook page, it’s the largest pumpkin in North America grown outside of a greenhouse, and the second-largest ever grown worldwide. Last year, his pumpkin came in at around sixteen hundred pounds. Pumpkins didn’t hit 1,000 pounds until 1996 and just barely broke the 1-ton limit in 2012.
