Giants’ Bumgarner struggles again vs Dodgers in 9-5 loss
The Dodgers and Giants still play eight more times this season, including the last three games of the regular season. In his other 24 starts, he has averaged seven innings and given up 1.9 runs.
“I understand the situation, and of course you want to keep going”, the 36-year-old said.
“It just shows what a competitor he is. He hasn’t pitched in over a month and he goes out there and shuts down a lineup like that”.
Giants: RHP Johnny Cueto (14-3, 2.90) will make his fourth start against the Dodgers this season.
Turner’s career-best month for home runs entering this season was six, hit in June 2015. They took two of three from the Mariners, one of the teams they’re chasing in the AL wild-card race. The Dodgers have gone from 6-1/2 games down to a season-high three games up, assuring themselves of a victory in the first of three series between the two rivals over the final seven weeks of the season. The Giants forced a three-game playoff and won in Game 3 after a four-run ninth inning. “Yeah, we haven’t been playing well, but hopefully we can turn it around”.
The Giants altered their rotation so trade deadline acquisition Matt Moore could make a difference in this big series.
Hill came just as advertised in the catalog.
It was small consolation when Bumgarner picked up a personal milestone, becoming the fifth Giants pitcher all-time to record 200 strikeouts for the third consecutive season.
The Giants had five hits in Hill’s six innings.
Arrieta (16-5) allowed a single to Alex Dickerson in the second and Christian Bethancourt’s double in the eighth. The Giants’ All-Star right-hander earned his first win of the second half in his last start against the Mets on Friday.
Hill didn’t walk a batter and 63 of his 81 pitches were strikes.
McHugh (8-10) gave up three runs in five innings, ending an 0-4 rut in his last five starts. “But they got the big hit, and we didn’t”. But he hadn’t pitched since July 7 because of recurring blister issues, and the Dodgers put him on the disabled list after acquiring him along with Reddick.
Said Crawford: “I thought I might have had enough”. “The only thing I can control is to go out there and continue to pitch with conviction and passion and intensity”.
Stripling made his major league debut at San Francisco on April 8, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning before manager Dave Roberts pulled him after 100 pitches. With a lefty warming up, Roberts stuck with his guy. “(The ball) got in on me a little bit, so I didn’t square it up quite as well as I would have wanted to. “I know he used a lot of energy with those first four hitters”. “He went out there and just competed”.
Pedro Baez, Adam Liberatore, Joe Blanton, and Kenley Jansen would come in to maintain the shutout and help Hill nab his first Dodgers victory. Crawford then tattooed a ball to deep right field, but on its way out of the park the ball made a decision to cut short the trip, instead falling in Josh Reddick’s glove at the right field wall to end the inning. “I’ve seen it all year”, Reddick said of Hill’s outing. He struck out only two batters but he didn’t walk anyone and relied on the Giants’ steady defense to record outs against a weak NY lineup. “I still liked that matchup”.
Kenley Jansen struck out two in a ideal ninth for his 37th save, giving him 604 career strikeouts, tying Jim Brewer for the most by a reliever in Dodgers history.
“This group has been in this position before”.
“Obviously, he wasn’t Bum-like tonight, and they were swinging the bats well”, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
The most memorable collapse between the two teams came in 1951 when the New York Giants went 37-7 down the stretch to eclipse the 13.5-game lead the Brooklyn Dodgers held in mid-August.
