Giants coach Coughlin defends Beckham Jr
This week Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said his set-to with the Carolina Panthers was preceded by players menacing him with a baseball bat and making homophobic remarks at his expense.
Beckham was in attendance for the appeal hearing, which was heard by James Thrash, one of two hearing officers appointed by the NFL and the players’ union, at the league’s offices in ny.
Beckham Jr. sent out a tweet apologizing for his actions, and he later released a statement on the Giants’ official website, which you can read in full here.
“I owe some people an apology”, said Beckham in a statement issued by the club after the ruling.
“If I had a dollar for all the ex-girlfriends that had false allegations about me”, Ball said. As a head coach, I feel responsible for our players. He’s a star. I wonder why people are going in that direction.
Several media outlets reported Monday that Beckham felt intimidated by the Panthers’ pregame actions, which included practice squad safety Marcus Ball carrying a bat and getting into a verbal confrontation with Beckham.
The Giants will need Beckham against the Vikings if they want to keep their slim shot at the playoffs alive.
The reason why Beckham got the suspension is because it was pretty clear he was the aggressor. “If you’re naive enough to think that way, you better do some soul searching yourself”.
Beckham and Norman began tangling at the outset of the game, which Carolina won 38-35.
Panthers coach Ron Rivera said his players denied using any slurs toward Beckham and suggested the accusation could be an attempt at spin control.
Beckham, who has 91 catches for 1,396 yards and 13 touchdowns this season, had three unnecessary roughness calls against him, one of them when he raced across the field and appeared to slam his helmet into that of Norman.
The NFL fined Norman a total of $26,044 for his role in the altercations with Beckham, which marred a game the Panthers won with a last-second field goal after blowing a 28-point, third-quarter lead.
“Everybody knows Odell is such a great player so I’m sure they had plans to maybe get him off his game, ” Wing said. According to ESPN’s Stats & Info, Norman has been fined five previous times in his National Football League career, but only once for something besides a uniform or a celebration violation.
On Wednesday, Odell appealed the suspension as it is his right under the collective bargaining agreement.
