Giants get Matt Moore from Rays for Matt Duffy
The Giants followed up their trade deadline deal for reliever Will Smith with another major move to bolster their starting rotation, acquiring Tampa Bay Rays lefty Matt Moore. After placing second in the NL Rookie of the Year votes in 2015, Duffy will head to the AL and mostl-likely back up All-Star Evan Longoria.
In addition, the Rays also get Lucius Fox, a 19-year old shortstop who is in his first pro season with the Low-A Augusta GreenJackets, and RHP Michael Santos, a 21-year old out of the Dominican Republic in his fourth pro season.
He’s until team control until 2020 after signing a 5-year, $14 million extension with three team options for $7 million, $9 million and $10 million, respectively.
Moore has struck out 109 batters in 130 innings this season.
Now the Giants must figure out how to incorporate Moore into a rotation that appears to have two respected veteran candidates for demotion in Matt Cain and Jake Peavy. 207 with a. 305 on-base percentage in A-ball for the Giants.
The Dodgers, Giants, Pirates and Rangers have been considered the teams most interested, though the Blue Jays, Cubs, Marlins and White Sox have also been scouting the Rays a lot. He’s a 21-year-old right-handed pitcher. Chris Archer, who is 0-3 with a 6.20 ERA in four career starts – including a loss on June 1 to the Royals’ scheduled Monday starter Danny Duffy, will try to continue that run of strong outings for the Rays.
