Giants hire McAdoo as coach
The New York Giants and Ben McAdoo have reached agreement for him to remain with the team as head coach.
No official announcement has been made, but an announcement could come as early as Thursday. The two sides were working on finalizing a deal Wednesday night.
In the wake of the Giants’ hiring their offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo, the Eagles have shifted their focus. McAdoo, according to a source, “wanted the NY job from the beginning”. But isn’t it a little weird that Coughlin could go to an NFC East Division rival?
Yeah, I would think so. “See what happens. I’m looking forward to it. I only see good things”.
With the 35-year-old Manning signed for four more seasons, it’s likely in the Giants’ best interest to keep him satisfied. They also spoke with Pat Shurmur, their offensive coordinator, and Duce Staley, their running backs coach, for the head coaching job.
The 38-year-old McAdoo will replace Tom Coughlin, who stepped down last week after 12 seasons in charge.
It would now appear that the Eagles have struck out on their top two candidates, Adam Gase and McAdoo.
McAdoo was also praised for his work with quarterback Eli Manning, reports ESPN.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because negotiations were ongoing with McAdoo, who spent the past two seasons as the Giants’ offensive coordinator.
The Giants’ blueprint when they hired McAdoo in 2014 was for Coughlin to put together a couple of playoff years, maybe even one more deep run, then retire gracefully and hand McAdoo the keys to his office with the arrow pointing up. His first coaching job was at Michigan State in 2001 and his first National Football League job was with the saints in 2004.
Fox Sports reported Wednesday that McAdoo will have former Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin – with whom he worked in Green Bay – on his coaching staff, possibly as offensive coordinator. “He’s prepared for this opportunity for a long time”.
