Giants’ Jason Pierre-Paul treated for injuries to hands in accident
With the organization having slapped its franchise tag on the Pro Bowler, he hadn’t signed his $14.8 million offer and isn’t under contract.
Meanwhile, the Giants were apparently still in fact-finding mode about the injury Pierre-Paul suffered over the weekend. The good news is his hand will remain intact. He’s expected to remain admitted and will continue to be treated and evaluated for his injuries. Despite social media speculation, he did not lose any fingers, and it doesn’t seem like his injuries are career threatening at this time. Pierre-Paul was set to receive a $60 million dollar extension from the Giants after placing the franchise tag on him. Per National Football League rules, the sides have until 15 July to negotiate a long-term deal.
Pierre-Paul posted two videos to his Instagram account Saturday night that appeared to show him next to a rental van filled with fireworks.
Schefter still described injuries to both Pierre-Paul’s hands. That means New York could pull the offer off the table in response to the accident, but they want Pierre-Paul on the field, rushing the passer in 2015.
When asked Monday about Pierre-Paul’s status for Week 1, the source said, “No idea”. For now it is best to hold off all speculation until we know the complete details and what the road to recovery for Pierre-Paul will hold. He could not be fined for missing minicamp last month because technically he is not under contract.
The timing of the incident will be heavily diagramed as Pierre-Paul and his agent have been lobbying for a longterm deal. When truly evaluating where Pierre-Paul sits when looking towards 2015, he’s now unsigned, but still plans to play under that franchise tag next season. More importantly from a contract standpoint, the Giants are reportedly concerned about the timing of the incident and the lack of judgement displayed by JPP.
