Giants’ Jennings was ordered not to score
On Monday, Bryant had successful surgery in which a screw was inserted into his right foot to fix the fifth metatarsal bone injured during the Cowboys’ Week 1 victory over the Giants. Jason Witten’s presence will aid the Cowboys, much like his late touchdown catch did in the win. They got running back Christine Michael from Seattle a week before the opener, and he was inactive against the Giants. Without quite possibly the game’s best receiver in Dez Bryant, he still managed to drive right down the field in 90 seconds, without a timeout, to score the game-winning touchdown. That allowed Dallas to use its final two timeouts after runs of two yards and one yard by Jennings.
The Giants running back told ESPN’s Dan Graziano that he was instructed inside the huddle not to cross the goal line.
On second down, Jennings was again told by Manning, “Rashad, don’t score”. “I have nothing but respect for Tom Coughlin, but he’s a guy that I think has to take a hold of the decision-making on the sidelines”. In all of those situations, I am very, very reluctant to do anything but score.
“Really the third-down decision is what bothers me more than anything”, he said.
“I thought that they may let us score to get the ball back, so that’s why I informed Rashad if they let you score, just go down at the one-inch line”.
Coughlin said he still trusts Manning. “I thought they (the Cowboys) only had one timeout after the play (in which Odell Beckham Jr.’s third-down catch was good for a first down)”, Manning said. Manning hoped to run more time off the clock, but somehow he ended up stopping the clock by throwing an incompletion on third down. When the Cowboys stopped the clock with 1:43 to go after the second-down run, the Giants were surprised. Josh Brown kicked his fourth field goal of the game to put the Giants up by 6. But at the end of the game, it was the Giants who flinched.
“I’ve got to be smarter in that scenario and understand that the clock is the most important thing there and that we weren’t going to go for it on fourth down”, Manning said. He had an exceptional game with eight receptions, 60 yards, and two touchdowns. New York called two consecutive run plays without intent to score, says Jennings. Despite Bryant’s injury the Cowboys won the game 27-26, according to CBS Sports. The other one is they have no pass rush.
“When you do a lot of positive things, but you give the ball up three times in your own area and you give them 17 points, that’s an issue”, Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett said.
