Giants kicking tires on Hakeem Nicks, Wes Welker
ESPN’s Josina Anderson reported Tuesday that Welker and fellow free-agent wide receiver Hakeem Nicks will work out for the New York Giants on Tuesday. Nicks spent summer in training camp with the Tennessee Titans before being cut in their final roster reduction.
Welker, 34, played with the Broncos in 2013 and 2014, getting 122 receptions for 1,242 yards and 12 touchdowns in 27 games.
Part of that may be because Welker suffered three concussions in 10 months leading up to the start of the 2014 season. Welker could prove to be a good weapon for the Giants, but the major question for New York is if he is worth the risk. Welker has a history with the Giants: His dropped pass in Super Bowl XLVI curtailed a Patriots drive and helped the Giants embark on their winning drive.
Nicks was the Giants’ first-round pick in 2009.
Since then his numbers have declined, but it’s possible a reconnection with Manning is what Nicks needs.
Big Blue is also working out former Redskins tight end Chris Cooley, Ebenezer Samuel of the New York Daily News reports.
One of the tight ends, Jerome Cunningham, missed last week’s game with a knee injury.
Cooley is 33 years old, and has not had a productive season since 2010, when he caught 77 passes for 849 yards.
The Giants seem to have a steady receiver depth chart with Rueben Randle, Victor Cruz and Odell Beckham Jr.at the top.
