Giants knock Redskins out of playoffs with Week 17 win
The Redskins were officially eliminated from postseason contention.
The Giants, who had their playoff seed clinched before the game started, beat Washington 19-10 to end the Redskins’ season. A defensive stop punctuated by the second interception of the game by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie with 1:12 left sealed the victory.
Quarterback Eli Manning is still struggling for consistency, and though the run game has picked up in recent weeks, still leaves a lot to be desired.
The New York Giants opted to play their starters for all four quarters in a meaningless Week 17 game on Sunday, and the results were exactly what they wanted.
Eli Manning threw for 180 yards with no touchdowns and zero interceptions. Even if the Redskins lose and both team qualify, the NFC North division victor, and a home tie in the Wild Card game, will be decided here.
Giants’ starters played throughout the game, as coach Ben McAdoo had promised.
With Perkins in the backfield, the Giants have added a whole new dimension to their offense that few teams anticipated.
The Giants would run the ball two more times – neither able to move the chains – before the Redskins got the ball back at their own 24-yard line. Thanks to a Josh Norman personal foul against Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants were able to extend their drive.
NY would extend their lead in the second quarter, as they drove 74 yards on 11 plays that was capped off by a Rashad Jennings touchdown run. WR Tavarres King, who had just one reception for 6 yards in the first 15 games of the season, hauled in a key 44-yard pass down the sideline from Manning late in the fourth quarter to set up the go-ahead field goal. Washington’s opening drive lasted just three plays before a punt. Gould also hit a 22-yarder in the first quarter. However long he plays, Josh Norman and the rest of the defense needs to keep him from blowing the top off. They need to play like they will want to play in the playoffs. A win tonight over the Lions at Ford Field would give the Packers the NFC North title and a home game next weekend in the wild-card round. Expect a great game between Washington and NY, two of the fiercest rivals in the NFL. Big Blue has handled the elements of the frozen tundra before.
It’s Green Bay’s eighth straight postseason berth. Right now, the 6th seed would travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks.
