Giants name Ben McAdoo to replace Coughlin
“It has been a privilege to work and learn under Coach Coughlin”, McAdoo said in a statement posted on the team’s website Thursday aftenroon.
He becomes the second-youngest coach in the NFL.
That would be Jim Fassel’s suggestion to Ben McAdoo. So they’re putting their chips on his number and casting a hopeful eye at the wheel of National Football League fate…. Keeping the offense for the immediate future happy was certainly a factor in choosing their new head coach. “I think Coach McAdoo has great leadership skills, and will do a great job being a head coach and leading us in the right direction”.
Sullivan has been with the Giants for the last two seasons after serving in the same capacity from 2010-2011, with a two-year run as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in between. Perhaps the New York Giants wanted to go after someone with significant coaching experience who can be their head coach for a long time. Coughlin was not fired, but given his club’s four-year absence from the postseason, it’s safe to assume that the Giants hierarchy gently shoved the veteran coach aside.
The Giants have liked what McAdoo has done with the offence the past two seasons, helping two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning get back on track.
Myers’ explanation makes far more sense.
And that will mean more than replacing some of the signs that hang throughout the building with Coughlin’s famous motivational quotes, or maybe tweaking the schedule or even the rule book, too.
The 38-year-old McAdoo has been on the fast track since reviving the offence over the past two seasons.
Former Miami Dolphin HC Joe Philbin is one of the favorites to join McAdoo’s staff as OC. McAdoo might have the endorsement of the Giants ownership, but he still has plenty to prove. Marion Campbell was the head coach in that era. Can he still guide the offense as he expands his responsibilities?
When Spagnuolo left NY the first time, Coughlin promoted Giants linebackers coach Chris Sheridan to coordinator. Mara insisted that change was necessary after another 6-10 season, and no doubt, he was right.
Yes, Coughlin is gone.
At least initially, that will define McAdoo’s first few years on the job. But on the surface, it looks like the Giants opted for business as usual.
It appears as though the two teams were trying to outwit each other and with the Giants having more pieces it was easier for the G-Men to force the Eagles hand in the entire situation. The Giants are anybody and while they did not have their strongest team in recent years, they were disappointed to not make the playoffs.
