Giants Odell Beckham Jr. loses appeal of 1 game suspension
Beckham was hit with the one-game suspension – the first-ever for a Giants player for an on-field infraction – for a series of altercations dueling with Panthers cornerback Josh Norman.
Norman himself was penalized twice for personal fouls in the game.
One thing the Panthers’ fifth-year coach did make clear was being upset about what he said were untrue reports that some players taunted Beckham with physical threats and homophobic slurs before Sunday’s game.
Norman told ESPN Wednesday that he planned to contest the fine. Norman was fined $8,681 for a face-mask incident and $17,363 for striking Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.in the head and neck area.
In hindsight, Wing said Beckham’s actions during the game probably were influenced by the pre-game run-in with the unidentified man, who Wing believed was a practice squad player. But Beckham’s actions – not just the helmet-to-helmet hit but all that led up to it – were too much for the National Football League to rescind the suspension.
The suspension was imposed by NFL vice president of football operations Merton Hanks, who ruled that Beckham’s actions placed his opponents at unnecessary risk of injury and should have been avoided. Beckham was reacting to his own flubbed reception and couldn’t handle the smack talk he was getting from Norman afterward.
“So that disappoints me because if there’s something out there that’s factual, there’s truth, there’s hard evidence, please present it to us as well so we can react accordingly”. I displayed poor sportsmanship.
“That wasn’t after the whistle, that was within the whistle… But I keep hearing all these things that everybody else is saying”, Rivera said Tuesday. I just don’t feel like that’s a part of the game that should be played. They want to be proud of us, and proud of players like me who represent their team.
Coughlin said the coaching staff warned Beckham last week not to retaliate or lose focus if provoked by Norman, a renowned agitator and one of the best pass defenders in the league. However, most believe this won’t be enough to revoke the punishment. What happened the other day was embarrassing to them and embarrassing to me.
Beckham has a long history of violence on the field, with multiple incidences of suspension. On that topic, Wing said, “There may have been, there may not have been, I don’t want to say there was because I don’t remember 100 percent”.
