Giants’ Odell Beckham preaches patience as season nears
With the rookie in the slot, pressure is taken off of All-Pro Odell Beckham, a necessary addition to keep defenses from shifting to Beckham’s side of the field.
The Giants’ second-round pick has had a strong training camp, and Big Blue’s top wideout only boosted the already-high expectations for the rookie receiver on Wednesday.
“I keep reminding him that his first game is September 11, even though you have to get your feet wet in the preseason”, Beckham said of Cruz.
In New York, the hype surrounding a player can be a lot to deal with, but Shepard is handling it all very well.
“I love it”, Beckham said.
“I remember when I first came in, you’re kind of out there with your head on a swivel and things like that. As days go on, you start to feel more comfortable, and you can just see him start to feel more comfortable”. “And he’s going to be a big-time player”.
Outside of Eli Manning, there may not be another player on the roster who is looked up to as much as Beckham is.
“You put two people on me you’ve got one on one with both of them”, Beckham said, referring to Shepard and Victor Cruz. “They have me doing some things out here that is new to me, but I am getting it down, I am still learning and it is coming along”. “It is going to be fun to start hitting somebody else and playing against other guys, playing against other DBs”.
As much as two-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning remains the constant on offense, Beckham is the centerpiece of an attack that becomes so diversified and hard to predict because of his versatility and skill.
Shepard isn’t picking up only on what Beckham says. The star wideout has been on fire in team drills, seemingly catching a touchdown every day.
Coach Ben McAdoo was not available to update Cruz’s status after practice, and offensive coordinator Mike Sullivan would not comment on his status. “(He’s) one of the things that eliminates the gray hair.
Though Beckham has had plenty of personal success in his young career, the Giants have been 6-10 each of his two seasons on the team. “I do want to better myself as a receiver but at the same time, help the team win”. Like I said, you’re just waiting to see. “There’s guys that we’ve added, there’s things that have improved”. I’ve never really – I mean, I’ve been a part of a culture like that where you really feel closely bonded with a team, and we’re all out here working, we’re all out here to struggle together, and that’s not always what it’s felt like, and it feels good.
