Giants overcome Dodgers, Rangers close in
Eduardo Nunez and Brandon Belt both hit homers as the San Francisco Giants held on to defeat the Los Angeles Dodgers, 2-0, on Vin Scully Bobblehead night at Chavez Ravine.
Scully, who said in a conference call earlier in the day that his love of baseball resulted from seeing a World Series line score from a Yankees-Giants game, even threw in some voice inflection in trying to imitate what Bumgarner and Puig were saying. He will be retiring from his press box permanently on October 2, when the Dodgers play the Giants in San Francisco.
That did not stop Scully from having a 67-year career calling play-by-plays for the Dodgers.
For the last time at home on Sunday, Scully will open his broadcast with the same reassuring greeting: “Hi everybody, and a very pleasant good afternoon to you wherever you may be”.
The San Francisco Giants stayed in a wildcard spot in Major League Baseball, while the Texas Rangers closed in on a division title.
“I’ve never wanted to get out in front of the game”, he said.
“Forget it”, Scully said referring to a home run.
Dodgers should win this series.
The San Francisco Giants look for another win after losing six of their last nine games. When the playoffs come, I don’t think it’s something where you necessarily have to rise to the occasion.
Corey Seager doubled in the third, becoming the first Dodgers rookie to have 40 doubles in one season. “God has been incredibly kind to allow me to be in the position to watch and to broadcast all of these somewhat monumental events”.
“He asked me, ‘Why you looking at me?'” Puig said after the game through a translator.
Scully’s retirement will not only sadden Dodgers fans, but will affect baseball fans across the nation, as he is recognized as one of the best, if not the best sports broadcaster to have ever lived.
The last time Moore faced the Dodgers, he came within one out of a no-hitter until Corey Seager singled in the ninth inning, on August 25.
“At the end of the day, it’s disappointing”, Hill said.
As for the crowd, it was the largest in all of Major League Baseball since August 30, 2012, when 54,612 came out.
Meanwhile, Rich Hill was out there for 77 pitches again, as manager Dave Roberts continues to nurture Hill’s blister problems. “I take 100 percent responsibility for this”.
“That’s just executing pitches”, he said. “It’s not acceptable to miss like that at this level”. Howie Kendrick is 6-for-18 against Moore, who is 2-1 with a 3.20 ERA in three career starts against the Dodgers.Maeda continued his strong second half Friday by allowing one run on three hits over five innings in a 3-2 win over Arizona. Because of employment commitments I was unable to attend that first game played in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The Dodgers plan to use Wood out of the bullpen, coming in to start innings.
