Giants P Wing: Beckham was threatened
Per NFL Network’s Rand Getlin, the star receiver’s suspension was upheld in the face of his appeal Wednesday as a result of his actions on the field during New York’s Week 15 loss to the Panthers.
In his Wednesday press conference Coughlin strongly said that Beckham, while wrong for the various melees that happened with the Panthers during Sunday’s game, wasn’t the only one at fault. That suspension was upheld, so Beckham won’t play in Sunday’s game in Minnesota and won’t be allowed to practice with the Giants for the rest of this week.
“Regardless of the outcome of my appeal, I apologise for my actions on Sunday”. During preseason, Beckham said he was being targeted, and that defenders were hitting him more than making plays on the ball.
Shortly after the ruling, Beckham apologized to “teammates, the Giants organization and to all the fans of the National Football League”.
“It’s certainly an accumulation of instances, and not just on Beckham”. Wing said the man refused to shake Beckham’s hand after it was offered near midfield, and later crossed onto the Giants’ side of the field with the bat in hand. It’s also unclear if any fines are coming for the Panthers brandishing a baseball bat near the Giants’ sidelines, or for any of the homophobic slurs that were hurled at Beckham in the pre-game, as several Giants sources alleged on Monday. Last season, after Ndamukong Suh was suspended for stepping on Aaron Rodgers, Suh’s suspension was overturned and he was fined $70,000 instead. I don’t have the flawless answer, but I think one thing they can say is how I handled myself the other day is an example of how not to conduct yourself.
The incident cost the Giants their top playmaker for a crucial match-up against the Minnesota Vikings; New York still has hope of making the playoffs this season. Even his coaches and teammates, who made a point of reminding everyone that they support Beckham in general, couldn’t condone what he did.
“The only thing I can remember clearly is what was said to him about he would be the reason that Odell he didn’t play today and other days”, Wing said.
“If you think (Beckham is) the only individual wrong in this situation, you’re naïve”, Coughlin added.
“I’ve seen some of the clips, but honestly they’re benign”, Rivera said, according to the Charlotte Observer. Among those violations was a shot to Panthers cornerback Josh Norman’s head after a 10-yard running start that the league called “particularly flagrant” in its announcement of the suspension.
