Giants receiver Victor Cruz returns to practice
“It’s important. It’s the game”, McAdoo said. If that happens, provided he continues to stay healthy and progress on the field, Cruz’s comeback would line up against – of all teams – the Jets in their annual preseason showdown Saturday night at MetLife Stadium.
Fantasy Spin: After not seeing Cruz in action for nearly two years, it’s hard to see him being a relevant fantasy football player in 2016.
Cruz’s (groin) roster spot with the Giants may ultimately be influenced by his practice and game availability this week, ESPN.com’s Jordan Raanan reports. I know he would definitely like to get some preseason in. He felt that it would be best to let Cruz decide if he wanted the details out.
Cruz, who had his 2014 season cut short due to a torn patellar tendon, went on to miss the 2015 season due to a series of calf injuries that occurred because of over-compensation from his previous injury.
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Leger Douzable (74) celebrates after sacking New York Giants quarterback Ryan Nassib during the third quarter of a preseason NFL football game, Saturday, Aug. 20, 2016, in Buffalo, N.Y.
“I think there are some signs in practice, the half-line drill, the 9-on-8 and 8-on-7 the physicality is there”.
There won’t be immediate changes in personnel, other than left guard Justin Pugh expected back at practice after missing Saturday’s game. He tore the patellar tendon in his right knee on October 12, 2014, against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“We’re going to put him back out there”, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said in a teleconference on Sunday afternoon to Dan Duggan of NJ.com. “Again, the biggest thing is just (the season opener on) September 11”. He’s hoping this week provides some information. “It’s the game. That’s what he’s looking forward to, and that’s what we’re looking forward to seeing him do”. “But I’m looking forward to seeing him”.
“We have to keep working on that in practice and make sure it carries over and shows up on game day”, he said via conference call.
“We’ll find out more [Tuesday] and [Wednesday]”, McAdoo said before Tuesday’s practice.
After coming through unscathed Tuesday, the next step is to string together back-to-back practices. “He got better playing inside and playing tackle”. The offense appears set, which is both a good and a bad thing considering the manner in which they have performed thus far. But for one day at least, the Giants were happy with where this situation is headed after years of health struggles.
“He’ll get treatment tonight, and then we’ll take a look at him tomorrow and see how he’s feeling”, McAdoo said. “He’s been through quite a lot”.
