Giants set to promote McAdoo
There is a report from ESPN that Coughlin still wants to coach for 2-3 more years, but even that makes this a temporary solution for the Eagles and shows that they feel they can win now.
Coughlin, the 69-year-old former head coach of the New York Giants was scheduled to meet Thursday with the Eagles.
“I have been preparing for this moment my entire professional life, and without the guidance and support of many people, I would not be here right now”, McAdoo said.
“You could say I’m more comfortable in sweats and a hoodie”, McAdoo said with a smile.
McAdoo earned praise for his work with Manning, who completed 63 percent of his passes the past two seasons under McAdoo’s tutelage and threw for 65 touchdowns with only 28 interceptions. “I take that personally and I accept my share – this is all under my watch and I know we need to get better as an organization”.
In this June 18, 2015, file photo, New York Giants offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo talks to reporters during NFL football minicamp in East Rutherford, N.J. The Miami Dolphins just hired Adam Gase (former Bears OC) to be their HC and he’s one year younger than McAdoo.
Before McAdoo arrived in NY, he spent eight years with the Green Bay Packers as tight ends coach for the first six seasons and as quarterbacks coach for the last two. When McAdoo replaced Gilbride it forced Manning to learn a new offensive system for the first time since he became a Giant in 2004.
“I like the pressure”, McAdoo said. McAdoo was asked if he was going to continue to call the plays as head coach, which would hardly be a state secret seven months before the season. Why that happened nearly certainly occupied a portion of his talk with the Eagles along with some of his coaching blunders, and the Odell Beckham Jr. blowup that this past season left the Giants with a 6-10 record.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) – Doug Pederson is the new man in charge of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Coughlin interviewed with the Eagles on Monday and had been set to meet with the team again on Thursday. The Chiefs play at New England on Saturday.
While the Eagles are trying to move away from a rocky three-year run with Chip Kelly, Pat Shurmur, his offensive coordinator during that time, is the team’s best option for their next head coach according to NJ.com’s Eliot Shorr-Parks.
Instead, owner Jeffrey Lurie and his staff went for someone quite familiar to the organization.
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he remembers meeting McAdoo at an National Football League combine when McAdoo was a lower-level coach.
