Giants take steps to prevent MRSA infection from spreading
According to ESPN, the MRSA was found when Fells went for treatment of an ankle injury. Doctors treated him for that issue discovered the staph infection, which turned out to be MRSA.
MRSA is a serious staph infection that is restitant to many antibiotics. Hopefully it stays out of the locker room from now on. Many people think it’s a spider bite at first. A few infections can be life threatening.
“We are concerned about Daniel Fells, we’re very concerned about that”, Coughlin said, adding that Fells is in good spirits and expects to be released from the hospital on Thursday. “With me, it started with a little pimple on my wrist, and I started picking at it and popping it, and I put on – in college we had these weightlifting straps and everyone just used it and threw it in [a bin]”. The site got itchy and then he got sick. “I nearly felt like paralyzed”.
“We had [senior vice president of medical services] Ronnie Barnes, we had team doctors, we had the person in charge of our facility in here to talk about the way the cleaning process is normally underway, and what we have done in addition to that, as well”, Tom Coughlin said.
Of course, a lot of it has to do with their postseason meetings that have become the stuff of legend, including two NFC Championship Games that sent the Giants on their way to world championships in Super Bowls XXV and XLVI.
Each National Football League team is responsible for its own infection control.
“We are working with infectious disease specialists, and we have defined protocols that we are following in consultation with the Duke Infection Control Outreach Network and local infectious disease specialists”, team spokesman Pat Hanlon said in a statement on Tuesday.
Three members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers – guard Carl Nicks, kicker Lawrence Tynes and cornerback Johnthan Banks – were diagnosed with MRSA last season, and the Bucs made attempts to clean the facilities in an attempt to stop the spread of infection.
Since the diagnosis, the team’s facility has been disinfected and the players were lectured and given time to ask questions.
Amukamara said players were being more diligent about wearing shoes in the shower, showering before entering cold and hot tubs, and washing themselves with antibacterial soap and wipes.
Daniel Fells, right, has six receptions for 60 yards in limited action with the Giants this season.
