Giants will take second look at Jason Pierre-Paul’s injuries on Tuesday
But that may not be as easy as he hopes.
Pierre-Paul had his right index finger amputated, fractured his thumb and lost parts of his middle finger and thumb in a Fourth of July weekend fireworks accident. JPP has missed five games already, going on six. Others in the organization are skeptical that he will play at all this year. If they believe he can play at a few point, they could discuss an arrangement in which he agrees to continue his rehab at their facility until he’s ready to play, they guarantee not to place him on the NFI list and they agree to pay him a prorated portion of that franchise salary for games he actually does play.
But the damage – which was first shown publicly in exclusive photos of his unbandaged hand published recently by the Daily News – is undoubtedly extensive.
According to Glazer, he asked if Nike could design him a specialty glove for his injured hand, but was denied because he still isn’t under contract with the team.
New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul will reportedly meet with team doctors this Tuesday.
The reason JPP is returning now is because time is running out for both sides to make a final call on his season. It’s possible the Giants could be so discouraged by what they see this week that they rescind Pierre-Paul’s $14.813 million franchise tender, which would make him an unrestricted free agent and likely sever ties between Pierre-Paul and the team that drafted him in the first round in 2010. But he’s no longer the same player and is by no means certain to be cleared by the Giants. The original value of his franchise tag tender was $14.8 million, but any contract he signs now would be for less. A person with knowledge of the situation doubted in recent weeks that Pierre-Paul would get on the field for the team this season. The Giants are now $11.9 million under the NFL’s salary cap, according to NFL Players Association records.
