Girl shot in neck on I
CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo. (AP) _ Authorities in far southeastern Missouri are investigator whether a stray bullet wounded an 11-year-old girl who was shot in the neck while traveling with her family on Interstate 55. She and her family were on vacation, driving south Saturday evening near the Arkansas border when a side window shattered.
The girl’s parents told deputies the shooting happened on I-55 when a window in their auto suddenly blew out.
Greenwell said that investigators determined that the man could have been responsible for the shot that hit the girl’s neck if he missed his shooting target or berm.
Initially the sheriff said evidence gathered at the scene suggested the shot came from a north-bound vehicle on I55. The official cause, however, had not been determined, he noted.
Two pistols were surrendered to deputies for ballistic tests to be done by a crime lab.
Greenwell said the 11 year old was release from the hospital Sunday morning and the family continued on their vacation. At this time, Greenwell believes it was an accident and no one else is in danger.
