Giuliani Speaks for Trump. Except When He Doesn’t.
“I think it’s going to be a very fruitful meeting, I think it’s going to be an exciting meeting”.
North Koreans did not take it kindly when US Vice President Mike Pence talked of “Libya model” approach towards North Korea.
“Yes … if [the meeting] goes well, I think that could happen”, Mr Trump told reporters on Friday morning (AEST) during a White House media conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. “At a minimum, we will start with perhaps a good relationship and that’s something that’s very important toward the ultimate making of a deal”.
Above all, Trump seems most enthused by the notion of being the first sitting US leader to hold direct talks with a scion of the ruling Kim dynasty.
“We all know Trump and see what he has been doing”.
“The letter was just a greeting”, Trump said.
“He would look at it very favourably so that could happen”, the U.S. president said at a joint press conference with Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe.
Trump is scheduled to meet with Kim on June 12 in Singapore to discuss nuclear disarmament on the Korean Peninsula.
President Trump on Thursday said he doesn’t think he has to prepare much for Tuesday’s North Korea summit, claiming it isn’t a question of preparation so much as a question of attitude.
In Korea, senior diplomats of the North and the US have negotiated what will be on the table.
Another key question is whether Trump and Kim will strike an agreement on formally ending the Korean War, which ended in a truce 65 years ago.
Mueller is investigating whether Trump associates coordinated with Russian Federation during the 2016 presidential election and whether Trump took steps to shut down that investigation through actions, including the firing of FBI Director James Comey.
Pompeo, however, added that the U.S. would work to guarantee North Korea’s security should it denuclearise.
“It’s in a sense our contribution to world peace”, he said, according to the country’s Straits Times.
Trump, meanwhile, has suggested that he may lean on Japan and South Korea to contribute financial assistance to North Korea as an incentive for Pyongyang to take steps toward denuclearization.
“I think it’s going to be a very fruitful meeting, I think it’s going to be an exciting meeting”.
Asked if Giuliani put the summit in jeopardy, Pompeo said, “We’re moving forward”.
White House legislative director Marc Short reiterated Pompeo’s comments, telling CNN’s Wolf Blitzer that Giuliani’s comments were “intended for jest”.
For his part, Abe pushed Trump to talk to Kim about the matter of Japanese abductees held in North Korea, as well as to make sure Japan’s interests were looked after in the talks. Japan had been briefed ahead of time on Trump’s decision to temporarily cancel the Kim summit following a hostile statement from the North, the official said.
