Give Trump time, don’t assume worst
Mr. Obama made the comments as he wrapped up his final foreign trip, in which he spent much of his time trying to reassure allies that Mr. Trump won’t alter USA foreign policy significantly.
Obama explained that since Trump won the election on November 8, his goal has been to be respectful to his successor and give the President-elect an opportunity to set up his team and put forward his policies. But he added that he would feel compelled to speak out on questions that go to the country’s core “values and our ideals”.
“Mr. President, I would like to commend you for the active efforts you’ve made to grow this relationship”, Xi said to Obama.
Thursday’s flurry of meetings was the start of fence-mending that also included the current and future first ladies.
He said he has already spoken with President-elect Donald Trump and shared his views on a number of issues, particularly trade and the fight against the Islamic State group.

“Once they look at how it’s working, I think they’ll determine that its actually good both for the Unites States and our trading partners”.
“We’re not going to be able to handle every problem, but the American president and the United States of America, if we’re not on the side of what’s right, if we’re not making the argument and fighting for it, then it collapses”, Obama said. “And they recognized and acknowledged, I think, the need for them to spend more resources on that”, he said.

Speaking at the end of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Peru, Mr Obama said even the best presidents end up confronting realities they didn’t anticipate, and believes the same will happen with the next administration.
Earlier in the day, Senate Democratic leader Charles Schumer expressed similar sentiments, saying he planned to work with Trump on issues they could agree on.
The outgoing president balked at the opportunity to quell the unrest almost two weeks after the presidential election when he fielded a question from the German press during a joint news conference on Thursday while standing beside German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin, Germany. Since World War I, about 626,000 US military personnel have lost their lives defending our freedom granted by the Constitution and its amendments.

Yet he added trade was likely to be a key exception, since Mr Trump has been deeply critical of deals such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the North American Free Trade Agreement. Both Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama attacked Trump as temperamentally unfit for the White House and dangerously unprepared to have access to U.S. nuclear codes.
The White House described Mr. Obama’s unscheduled meeting with Mr. Putin as “informal”, and pointedly noted that it lasted only four minutes.
