Global Day for Disaster Reduction: All you need to know
This year, the theme for the day is “Knowledge for Life”.
The Sendai Framework, adopted in March this year, is the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda, which calls explicitly for governments to employ a people-centered approach and engage directly with indigenous peoples in the design and implementation of policies, plans and standards, and to use traditional and local knowledge in disaster risk assessments. The secretary was addressing a discussion organised by the Department Of Disaster Management, Oxfam and Christian Aid at the Daily Star Centre in the capital marking “International Day for Disaster Reduction 2015 observed yesterday”. It’s also a day to encourage every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster-resilient communities and nations.
The United Nations (UN) on Wednesday underscored the importance of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction as it urged countries to increase local knowledge that would reduce damage to life and property during disasters as the world celebrates the worldwide Day for Disaster Reduction.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has planned a week of activities in commemoration of global Day for Disaster Reduction. Speaking at the midday “Angelus” prayer in St. Peter’s Square in Rome, he said he was joining all those who with foresight are committed to the protection of our common home, to the promotion of a global and local culture of disaster reduction and to greater resilience against them, through harmonizing new and traditional knowledge, with particular attention for the most vulnerable populations. He said the power of traditional, ingenious and local knowledge is “indispensable” in reducing harm from disasters.
Country Director of Christian Aid Shakeb Nabi and Jahangir Alam of Dhaka Ahsania Mission also spoke at the discussion.
