Goalkeeper Jaime Penedo is leaving LA Galaxy after 2 years
The first was Stefan Ishizaki back on July 4th and this is Penedo becomes the second player to ask for his release from the club. “With the experienced defenders that we already have, this is a great opportunity for Tommy to get valuable playing time at a solid level”, said General Manager Paul McDonough. “At some point players need to live by the contracts they sign”. Penedo, the starting goalkeeper for Panama’s national team, was making $178,125 this season. His agent, Eddie Rock, declined comment. “We wish Donovan the very best in the future”. “I think it’s fair to say that Jaime feels this move is good for his family”.
Without him, the Galaxy is thin in goal. Brian Rowe has started for the Galaxy in Penedo’s absence.
Ricketts, on the other hand, has a wealth of experience – both with the Galaxy and the league.
He was MLS’s Goalkeeper of the Year in 2010 and again in 2013 with the Portland Timbers.
Another attractive thing about Ricketts is his contract.
Nobody knows where Penedo will land, but if the LA Galaxy can bring back Ricketts in return, it could work out in the Galaxy’s favor.
It helps that Orlando City needs to create room on the roster after acquiring Adrian Winter and David Mateos from Europe.
Penedo’s departure places a major hole in net for the Galaxy. He appeared in 61 MLS matches for Los Angeles compiling a record of 29-14-17 (win-loss-tie) with 21 shutouts.
Jaime Penedo has spent the past month in goals for Panama at the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
Minutes before being placed on waivers, Penedo turned to Twitter to hint at the difficulty he would have in leaving the team.
