Goff Makes Debut As Rams Lose 14-10
A late Miami Dolphins rally had washed away what appeared to be a certain victory for the Rams and their rookie quarterback in his regular-season debut.
LOS ANGELES Maybe quarterbacks shouldn’t be protected like Federal Bureau of Investigation informants, but that’s a philosophical discussion that does not absolve the Rams’ Aaron Donald.
Suddenly, the Dolphins found life.
Gase said, “Nope. It was either going to be a pick or a touchdown”.
The Rams got the ball back with 0:41 remaining, but they only drove 12 yards before throwing a failed Hail Mary pass as time expired.
It would also be fair to say that the Dolphins have had some good fortune during their winning streak, particularly the past two games.
“They finished the game and we didn’t”. We knew we had some things we had to clean up personnel wise. We need production, we need to minimize mistakes, we’ve got some repeat mistake-makers. “We’ve got to give Jared more opportunities, through play action, to get the ball down the field”. Pro Bowl defensive tackle Aaron Donald received a 10 yard penalty for roughing the passer on Miami’s game winning drive. The drive would end in a touchdown.
The Rams have always been penalty-prone under Fisher, and that hasn’t changed just because the team has changed addresses.
Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill celebrates a touchdown against the Rams.
“It’s hard to praise any of your players in a loss like this”, Fisher said, “but when all eyes were on our quarterback, I thought he handled the game pretty well”. “I think that’s what we needed”. As you correct the game, you show them the contact plays and the extraordinary plays that were made in this game – unfortunately, it ended up in a losing effort.
His first pass was tipped at the line of scrimmage.
The Rams rank 31st in total offense, 28th in passing and 29th in rushing. After shutting the Dolphins out for 56 minutes, they gave up two late touchdowns and lost 14-10. “Cincinnati game, that Tennessee game, were some turning points for us to where we knew we had some issues in some, certain places”.
In the fourth quarter, with the Rams facing a 3rd-and-10 near midfield, the pocket collapsed and Goff was forced to flee, dodging Miami defenders in the backfield before taking off for the sideline. After a three-and-out by Los Angeles, the Dolphins took over with 2:11 left on the clock and 75 yards away from the goal line.
Zuerlein’s 48-yard attempt bounced off the upright – his first miss from inside 50 yards this season. Considering that Gurley led the league previous year with 14 runs of at least 20 yards, his sophomore campaign (590 yards, four touchdowns) has become downright depressing. Dolphins running back Jay Ajayi, on the other hand, broke four on his 16 carries against the Rams.
“There was constant (defensive) pressure”, Fisher said. It was very impressive to watch those guys – where we’ve started from to where we’ve come in a short period of time. “You can’t have all those penalties that we had and expect to win”.
NOTES: The Rams and Chargers are again discussing a possible move by San Diego to Los Angeles, Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff told the NFL Network. Left tackle Branden Albert (left wrist) and center Mike Pouncey (hip) were inactive, and rookie Laremy Tunsil (shoulder) departed before halftime.
Hill was arrested Saturday morning by the California Highway Patrol on suspicion of DUI after crashing his white Mercedes Benz C350 into the rear of a big rig on the Ventura (101) Freeway in Encino, authorities said. Both clubs resume play next Sunday.
In the first “home” game of his National Football League career, Tom Brady threw four touchdown passes without an interception, as his New England Patriots slammed the host San Francisco 49ers, 30-17.
