Gold Star families demand apology from Trump
After the Republican presidential nominee said she had “nothing to say” about her son during the Democratic National Convention, on Sunday the mother of an Army Captain Humayun Khan blasted Donald Trump.
After Donald Trump attacked the family of a fallen Muslim army captain, veterans’ groups from across the political spectrum are pushing back.
Ghazala wrote in an op-ed for the Washington Post, “Here is my answer to Donald Trump: Because without saying a thing, all the world, all America, felt my pain”.
Brian Duffy, head of the 1.7-million-member VFW, said in a statement that election year or not, the nation’s oldest and largest war veterans group will not tolerate anyone berating a Gold Star family member for exercising their right to free speech. “Whoever saw me felt me in their heart”. “They represent the best of our country”, he said. I thought nothing of the fact that Ghazala Khan did not speak but rather stood there as her husband shared their story.
“I requested Sharon to introduce me, because I understood that our Gold Star families have made a sacrifice that most of us can’t even begin to imagine”.
And according to McCoy, many of Trump’s proposed veterans policies-such as privatizing the Department of Veterans Affairs-are opposed by a majority of even Republican veterans, while solutions such as a phone hotline are already in place.
Looking forward, he said that Trump’s comments on Khan may push voters away.
For his part, Ethan-who has voted for candidates on either side of the aisle in the past-suggested that the outrage that Trump’s recent comments have inspired will continue to November.
Without specifically mentioning the dispute between Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump and the Khan family, Obama went out of his way to talk about Gold Star families in a previously scheduled speech to the Disabled American Veterans in Atlanta. He was 34 when he was killed by a sniper’s bullet, after spending half of his life in the Army. “And honor them. And be humbled by them”, Obama said. Khizr Khan gave a speech in which he called Trump’s proposal to temporarily ban Muslims from entering the U.S. Ted Lieu, D-California, Ruben Gallego, D-Arizona, and Seth Moulton, D-Massachusetts – sent a letter to House Speaker Paul Ryan urging him to withdraw his endorsement of Trump.
“The comments about Mrs. Khan because she didn’t speak on stage, that seemed very cruel”, she said.
I will never forget April 29, 2007, a day that started as a family barbecue at my parents’ home. My dad whom I had never seen cry in my entire life broke down into tears, and I looked into the eyes of my young daughter and realized that she would never know her uncle and my best friend. If one of them died, a gold star replaced the blue star. And we’re going to keep it that way.
