Golden Globes Nominations Snubs & Surprises
Finally “Penny Dreadful” – a show that manages to stay under the radar despite getting great reviews- got itself a nomination for “Best Performance by an Actress in a TV Series- Drama” for actress Eva Green. The results were announced yesterday and the event will only take place on 10 January 2016. It will be hosted by comedian Ricky Gervais.
Actors Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo are evidently having a bad year, as they were passed over for not just the Golden Globe nominations, but also for the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
“Without straining for pathos, using his battered body as an asset but never as a prop, the actor finds continually surprising, understated notes of tenderness and regret”, wrote Variety. The film did not receive a best picture nod, however, which may come as a disappointment to the SVOD, which has strategically chosen to distribute the film in theaters to make it eligible for awards such as the Golden Globes and the Oscars.
The comedies have performed better at the box office, though the Academy Awards have been generally unfriendly toward the genre.
Alicia Vikander, best actress nominee for “The Danish Girl” and best supporting actress nominee for “Ex Machina”: “To be considered amongst all these brilliant actresses and their outstanding performances is such an honour”.
With its two nominations, tiny broadcast outlet CW beat CBS’ single mention (for supporting dramatic actor Alan Cumming in “The Good Wife”) as well as NBC (which will air the Globes awardscast on January 10, but was completely snubbed on Thursday by the Globes).
Tom McCarthy, best director, screenplay and best film nominee for “Spotlight”: “The best picture nomination really speaks to everyone’s work”.
It will compete with blockbuster space adventure “The Martian”, Melissa McCarthy caper “Spy”, coming-of-age comedy “Trainwreck” and “Joy”, inspired by the story of the woman who designed the household Miracle Mop.
Brie Larson, best actress nominee for “Room”: “Wow”.
The nominees for best actor in a drama are Bryan Cranston (Trumbo), Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Eddie Redmayne (The Danish Girl), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), and Will Smith (Concussion).
Jennifer Jason Leigh – Nominee for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture “The Hateful Eight” & Best Animated Feature “Anomalisa”: “Thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press for recognizing two projects that mean so much to me”.
We’re also seeing a lot of television shows entering the competition with American Horror Story: Hotel and American Crime leading the pack. Still, they got many of their nominations right in a year when the awards race is wide open and unpredictable.
Besides “Veep”, others nominated in the best TV series- comedy are “Casual”, “Mozart in the Jungle”, “Orange Is the New Black”, “Silicon Valley” and “Transparent”.
