Golden Globes should provide traction in Oscar race
Despite some reports claiming otherwise, the network confirmed to EW that the 73rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, honoring the best in film and television, will not be online anywhere during the show. NBC’s red carpet coverage starts at 4 p.m. PST, followed by the ceremony from 5 p.m.to 8 p.m.
This year the show promises not to disappoint as British comedian Ricky Gervais returns to dish out his biting jokes, sparing none of the stars guzzling champagne at the gala, or even members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association which picks the Globe winners. The group behind the Golden Globes – the Hollywood Foreign Press Association – announced its nominees just days before the first industry screening of “Star Wars” last month, according to the Associated Press.
In the comedy category, the majority of the movies nominated are surprisingly, not all that amusing.
Rylance’s Wolf Hall co-star Damian Lewis, who played Henry VIII in the series, is also nominated in the best supporting actor category.
“Carol” star Cate Blanchett will contend against co-star Rooney Mara for best drama actress, as well as Saoirse Ronan (“Brooklyn“), Brie Larson (“Room“), and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl“).
Or, will the race be between “The Revenant” and “Mad Max: Fury Road”, the tent-pole pic that opened in May, but hasn’t been forgotten in this awards season? On the comedy side, despite Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ four consecutive Emmy wins for Veep, the show has never won at the Globes, though it faces the incumbent victor in the category, Transparent. And the trophy got the look that we know today.
“The Revenant” could bring home a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, but it has an uphill battle.
HRC supporters, including Bryan Cranston, Jamie Lee Curtis, Alan Cumming and Lady Gaga, were also nominated for their work. Jodie Foster, Sigourney Weaver and Shirley MacLaine tied for the Best Actress Golden Globe in 1989. Ricky Gervais hosts from the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills.
“But I wouldn’t bet my money on it because there are other possibilities, ‘ he said”. And then there are nominees like Amy Schumer, Hollywood’s latest “it-girl” who has forged a reputation with her sharp, sassy and no-holds-barred comedy. Surly the real Joy’s shoes were a lot for Lawerence to fill, but we think she told the entrepreneur’s story in a very relatable, captivating and inspiring way.
