Golden Globes: ‘The Revenant’, ‘The Martian’ named best films
Though Inarritu had a similar run at the Academy Awards last year with the best-picture winning “Birdman”, he won only a share of best screenplay at last year’s Globes.

The Martian won for best comedy or musical, and the film’s star Matt Damon won for best actor, even as Gervais pointed out of the absurdity of the Globes including the sci-fi spectacle in the comedy or musical category. Last year’s victor Julianne Moore (“Still Alice”) went on to win the Oscar as well.
The 40-year-old star, who picked up the best supporting actress gong for her role in Danny Boyle’s film Steve Jobs, said she did not expect to win the award.
The Martian accepted the Golden Globe for best motion picture comedy. It was a super amusing split-second – but shockingly, while the smart money was on Tambor, the award for best actor in a comedy series wound up going to Gael Garcia Bernal. An apparently gobsmacked Lady Gaga, winning best actress in a limited series or TV movie, didn’t get the message.
Another surprised star wasSylvester Stallone, who admitted he was shocked that his name was called as Best Supporting Actor for his work in Creed – so much so that he didn’t notice a room full of stars who gave him a standing ovation. His previous best actor awards were for his roles in “The Wolf of Wall Street” and “The Aviator”. That includes host Ricky Gervais, who looked like a drunk, greasy mess around the time he had to introduce presenter Mel Gibson.
“I want to thank my imaginary friend Rocky Balboa for being the best friend I ever had”, the veteran actor said upon receiving the prize.
“I love seeing Ricky once every three years because he reminds me to have a colonoscopy”, US-born, Australian-raised Gibson said.
In the best foreign movie category, Hungarian Holocaust drama Son of Saul was the victor.
Brie Larson was named best actress in a drama for her work in “Room”.
The Globes have grown into one of the most popular award show broadcasts of the year, thanks to increasingly credible nominees, its trademark relaxed atmosphere and its unique position as a major awards show that honors both film and television.
Newcomer Rachel Bloom, 28, beat veterans Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jamie Lee Curtis in her role as the “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” in the CW’s new musical comedy series, which she also helped to create.
Jon Hamm repeated his Emmy win for playing Don Draper in the final season of “Mad Men”.
Best actress in a TV drama went to Taraji P. Henson for “Empire”.
Accepting his award, he thanked the show’s creator Matthew Weiner, saying: “Thank you to Mr Weiner for writing this frightful person all the way through to the end of this incredible ride and picking me to play him”.
Denzel Washington was honoured with the Cecil B. Demille award, the Golden Globes’ version of a lifetime achievement award.
