The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is known for playing by its own mysterious rules, and this year’s Golden Globe nominations proved no exception.
But if Oscar forecasters are looking to sift through Globe tea leaves, there appear to be few sure things.
Since 1995, the SAG Awards have been a major Hollywood award event; they are the only major awards show that honor only actors, and are voted on by fellow actors, who are members of the Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists group.
And that’s probably because none of the actors in the film are being campaigned for lead role nominations.

Netflix’s Narcos and Hulu’s Casual, two very good shows competing in drama and comedy, respectively, no doubt reach smaller audiences than perennial Globes favorites (and current series snubs) Homeland, Mad Men, and Downton Abbey.

Other digital broadcasters also did well, with Amazon earning five nominations and Hulu nabbing its first. Star Tom Hanks, a four-time Globes victor, Spielberg and the film seem to be out of the larger awards conversation completely.
The Globes’ tweets have since been deleted.
The announcement of the Golden Globe nominations on Thursday morning did little to clarify the movie awards season.
Tinseltown’s awards season culminates with the Oscars on February 28.
