Golden State Warriors work OT to extend streak
The Golden State Warriors’ best start in franchise history is now a family affair as Stephen Curry scored 34 points in a 107-99 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Saturday.
Curry went for 46 points on 15-for-25 shooting in a 129-116 win for the Warriors. Dallas played without a trio of starters – Dirk Nowitzki, Wesley Matthews and Chandler Parsons – but it didn’t matter as they took advantage of the slumping Rockets. It was the Nets’ first lead after the third quarter of the season, and it came against the team that routinely turns games into mincemeat between the half and the last 12 minutes.
Reserve Warriors swingman Andre Iguodala sent the game to overtime with a tying three-pointer with 5.9 seconds remaining in regulation, allowing them to outlast the Nets and remain the NBA’s lone unbeaten team.
Still, it never seemed like the Warriors would lose. They are a wonderful offensive team, the Los Angeles Clippers forward admitted, but what sets them apart is their defense. Thanks to overtime, they have scored 100 points in 40 consecutive home games.
“I told the guys during the first timeout that we were fine”, he said. “It was the first time this season we’ve come in here at halftime deflated like that”.
Last night against the Brooklyn Nets, Curry made his 1,246th career three pointer to eclipse the career number of three pointers of his father Dell.
The 27-year-old reigning National Basketball Association MVP is having a blistering start to the season, averaging an absurd 33.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 5.1 assists per contest while hoisting 11.5 three-pointers per game.
For the 2nd straight night, the Nets were tested in the final seconds.
Brooklyn, which completed its road trip 1-3, had two shots at a win, but point guard Jarrett Jack misfired on an 18-footer before Lopez’s miss at the horn.
The Warriors next game is against the Toronto Raptors are Oracle on Tuesday night.
Dell Curry was known back in the day as one of the league’s deadly three point artists.
Iguodala dominated this matchup, dishing out six assists to three turnovers as compared to Johnson’s 3-to-5 assist-to-turnover ratio.
“Andre plays his best when you need him to”, interim head coach Luke Walton said. “He’s a luxury to have on the court”. Ultimately they couldn’t close the game out as LeBon James, who played 45 minutes, missed two of his three shots and committed two turnovers in the final extra period.
Goran Dragic finished with 14 points and Hassan Whiteside grabbed 14 rebounds for Miami, which started the game on a 9-0 run and opened the fourth quarter with a 13-4 spurt.
“I think he’s setting the new standard as a shooter in this league”, Walton said.
If Curry keeps up this torrid pace, it’s worth monitoring how teams begin to scheme against him. I wasn’t taking him out, unless they went small, Lopez came out or he asked for a sub.
