Golf roundup: Bryson DeChambeau advances to U.S. Amateur semifinals
Paul Dunne’s US Amateur Championship campaign is over after the Irishman lost his quarter-final meeting with Bryson DeChambeau.
NeSmith, the SEC champion, fell to Walker Cup player Bryson DeChambeau, who plays for Southern Methodist.
As U.S. Amateur finalists, DeChambeau and Bard are expected to receive invitations to next year’s Masters.
Crocker cut the gap to 1 hole with a birdie at the par-4 11th. That includes a big back-nine rally for a 1-up victory over Arizona State senior Jon Rahm, who had a big 3-up lead after the 10th hole.
“Obviously I didn’t perform today exactly how I wanted to and didn’t win my match but Bryson is one heck of a competitor”.
DeChambeau plays all of his irons at a 6-iron length of 37.5 inches and has all his clubs weighted the same so that he can make the same swing with all of them.
“I haven’t even thought about that yet”, DeChambeau said. Bard won the match againat Kenta Konishi of Japan, 3 and 2.
DeChambeau essentially put away Crocker, a USC sophomore from Westlake Village, by winning Nos. If I can stay in the moment, Ill be all right.. Bryson has had an incredible career so far. It’s going to be tough, it really is. James started hot, posting birdies on the first two holes to race to a 2 up lead, but Crocker answered with a birdie the par-5 sixth to get his round going.
After four straight come-from-behind wins in the tournament, Bard never trailed Konishi on Saturday.
It’s been a great year for Virginia golfers, with the 2015 Cavaliers team advancing to the NCAA Finals, McCarthy qualifying for the U.S. Open, and Steve Marino returning to form on the pro tour. “I can’t remember exactly – I know Phil Mickelson has done it. Tiger Woods I think did it – Jack and Tiger, yeah”.
