Golfer Billy Hurley III’s father reportedly dead from self-inflicted gunshot wound
When asked about the Hurley Jr. case, Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kraig Troxell stated that deputies on Wednesday morning responded to the 42600 block of Lovettsville Road where an adult male appeared to have taken his own life. That’s what happened, as a person in Texas identified Willard Hurley from media reports and contacted police, who were able to get him home safely.
Billy Hurley III’s father, Willard Hurley Jr., died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Loudoun County, Va., according to a statement released by Hurley III.
Hurley announced his father’s death in a statement from his management company on Thursday.
Hurley is a 33-year-old PGA Tour player and former Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy whose father went missing for almost two weeks at the end of July. The Hurley family did not reveal the reasons for his departure.
Willard “Bill” Hurley Jr., 61, was reported missing before his son played in the Quicken Loans National tournament in Virginia late last month.
“I want to thank the PGA Tour and all those who provided their support, prayers and encouragement”, Hurley, 33, said in the statement. “The PGA Tour community has always taken care of us, and my family and I are very grateful for that”. He told police he was fine and had been “simply travelling”.
Hurley III finished in a tie for 25th at the Barracuda Championship last week as he attempted to climb into the top 125 to earn a spot in the FedEx Cup playoffs.
