Golfers in Ledgeview remember Arnold Palmer
Player had so many vivid memories of Palmer, he said, and his recollections matched many of those of Nicklaus.
“The first time I met Arnold was 1958. and we started off on the first tee and we had a driving contest, and I won the driving contest”, Nicklaus said Monday on SportsCenter.
Hernly said Palmer would take advantage of his full upper body strength – something he noticed about him right away.

Palmer was born in Latrobe in September 1929 and helped show America that golf was a sport worth watching.
In 1974, Palmer was one of the inaugural members inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
“I’ve respected a number of players who came before me, but Arnold Palmer was my model on and off the course”, he said in a statement (via golfchannel.com). I wish I had another chance to talk to him, but I am so glad we talked a couple weeks ago on his birthday (Sept. 10), when he sounded great. As we walked to his table, Arnold stood up and shook my hand.
Palmer was the victor of over 90 golf tournaments, including the four Masters wins in 1958, 1960, 1962, 1964, a U.S. Open win in 1960 and two British Open wins in 1961 and 1962.
Arnold Palmer also had a long history with the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, where he picked up his first professional victory in a Pro-Am tournament in 1954.
Pelley says “in this week of the playing of the 41st Ryder Cup in particular, we remember fondly his time as a six-time Ryder Cup player and two-time captain”.
