Gomez traded to Astros after Mets deal falls through
WFAN’s Mike Francesa said on Thursday afternoon that the deal only fell apart because of health concerns, not financial issues, contrary to some reports coming out of Milwaukee. “It’s as simple as that”. With the Mets still actively looking to add another bat, Flores realizes that, until the non-waiver trade deadline passes at 4 p.m. Friday, there is always the possibility that he still could be dealt.
Heading to Milwaukee were four high-level prospects: outfielders Brett Phillips and Domingo Santana and pitchers Josh Hader and Adrian Houser. The announcement was made by Astros General Manager Jeff Luhnow. “That’s what our fans want”. Also, Los Angeles obtained relievers Jim Johnson, a former Tiger, and Luis Avilan from Atlanta, adding needed depth to the bullpen.
The only catch? The trade never happened.
“The nearly 24-year-old Flores, who was (curiously) still in the game, has been part of the Mets” organization since he was 16, was understandably emotional. “For what?’ I didn’t know”. These pitchers will not only probably join the Brewers top-30 list, but they will also give them two upside arms who are closer to reaching the major leagues. 89 ERA in 21 begins for the Brewers.
Gomez will start in center for an Astros team that already has a crowded outfield, including Jake Marisnick, Colby Rasums, Preston Tucker and George Springer, who will miss another month due to a fractured wrist. We did our homework, as we do with every trade, and we’re very comfortable with the players we got. “Everybody loves that”.
It was torture last night watching Mets shortstop Wilmer Flores crying on the field after learning he was being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers for former Twin Carlos Gomez. He raved about Gomez. This guy is exciting.
Now that Hamels is gone, CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman wrote the Yankees will talk to the Tigers about Price, though they are not necessarily considered a favorite to get him. He’s got a lot of energy…. “He really has all the potential in the world”. The 29-year-old is hitting.
Gomez has posted a not-so-special eight home runs, while driving in 43 runs and stealing just seven bases, but the former first-round pick has proven in past years that he has legitimate five-tool talent.
Gomez has had a mediocre season with a slash line of.266/.332/.429.
Rumours of the deal were so pervasive Brewers teammates of Gomez took a “farewell” photo on the club’s chartered plane.
But as it turned out, the Mets weren’t the only team in the race for Gomez.
“You can see reasons why they are in first place”, Fiers said.
Rafael Soriano (2-0) pitched a scoreless seventh, Pedro Strop retired the side in the eighth and Hector Rondon finished for his 14th save in 17 tries. He won’t be a free agent until after the 2019 season.
