GONE FOR GOOD Ex-Galaxy star Gerrard retires from soccer
Perhaps looking to rewrite the story of his own career in England, the Brazilian sought to justify his record for United by comparing his haul of Premier League winners medals to Gerrard.
Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard, who left the LA Galaxy last week, is now leaving the game.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has paid tribute to former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard following his retirement from football.
The midfielder, who led England at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, was his country’s fourth most-capped player making 114 appearances and scoring 21 goals. The Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard enjoyed a glittering career and scored 186 goals for Liverpool in 710 appearances in time spanning 17 years.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has reiterated “the door is always open” to Gerrard, whose contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy expired this month, but he is unlikely to find himself fast-tracked into first-team duties.
Gerrard spent virtually his entire career at Liverpool having made his debut as a substitute against Blackburn Rovers in 1998. He won the Champions League (almost singlehandedly at times), two FA Cups, three League Cups and a UEFA Cup as well as an absolute host of individual awards.
A Liverpool icon, Gerrard lifted nine trophies with his boyhood club, including the inspiring 2005 Champions League victory over AC Milan in Istanbul.
The 36-year-old called time on his playing days earlier today, just 24 hours after turning down the managerial vacancy at Sky Bet League One side MK Dons. “I like him, and if I can help him I will”, the German added.
He made his England debut against Ukraine in 2000 and scored his first global goal in a 5-1 win in Germany in a 2002 World Cup qualifier in 2001. “I feel very fortunate to have had the career I’ve had but none of it would have been possible without the support of so many people”.
“In life you need space to learn something new”, Klopp told reporters on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s home game against second from bottom Sunderland.
