Gonzalo Higuain ‘turns down Napoli contract’
However, the Italian club’s president is adamant that the Argentine global will remain with the club beyond this summer, but has also admitted that if any club is willing to pay his €90m (£64.7m, $100.7m) release-clause, he will be allowed to leave during the ongoing transfer window.
Chelsea and Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain after his agent confirmed the striker has turned down a new contract offer from Napoli, according to the Express.
Brother Nicolas, however, told Radio CRC that his brother was “happy to continue with the current conditions” and suggested that Napoli’s offer did not represent a sufficient enhancement anyway.
Higuain is a name many should be familiar with as he’s constantly been linked with a move to the Premier League with reported interest dating all the way back to his days with Real Madrid.
“We can talk about this affair as much as we want but he [Higuain] is in charge [of his future]. We’re calm and happy to continue with the current conditions”.
“At the moment we have faith Gonzalo will stay at Napoli, in a team which is 100 percent focused and can win something”.
“It seems unusual, but the big clubs have not contacted me, nor have I spoken with anyone”, Nicolas Higuain added.
Higuain has some work to do this season after a rough summer internationally, missing a pair of chances in the Copa America final as Argentina fell to hosts Chile. He’s an introverted player, not some snake oil salesman who likes to show off. You won’t see him on Twitter taking pictures all day. “I’ve heard he’s training well, and that’s what’s important”. “It’ll be a tough campaign, but when the first ball is kicked we [Napoli] will try to show what we’re worth”, he said.
