Goodell, owners expect future vote on LA relocation
Among them was an assertion by the Jets and Giants ownership, who share a stadium, that if two teams are moving to Los Angeles, they must do so at the same time in order to be on equal footing.
Added Rooney, “The target (for a vote) is January”. Davis declined to discuss the specifics of the talks.
National vehicle Rental secured the naming rights to the proposed riverfront stadium in St. Louis on Wednesday, pledging $158 million over 20 years. He said the league expects to receive St. Louis’ term sheet soon. That city has issues to resolve regarding the public funding for a new complex, while the San Diego stadium may require a vote in June, by which time the relocation process could be long completed.
“We need to take a vote and see what the result is”, said Pittsburgh Steelers owner Art Rooney II, who chairs the NFL’s six-member Los Angeles owners committee. There will be updates from the three teams, and representatives of those three cities will brief the 32 owners on any progress – or lack thereof – on stadiums in their regions.
“I think there’s a tremendous recognition in those communities that the stadium needs to get built – there are efforts ongoing in many of those communities”, he said. We need to find long-term solutions here. “I think there’s also interest in being back in the entertainment capital of the world”. But we have to do it right.
Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay said the league is going to try to avoid turning the race for L.A. into a popularity contest among those owners considering a move. With that behind him, it removes one of the hurdles in his path to a potential relocation to L.A.
Even with that topic being at the forefront of the meetings and representatives from each team making presentations, no final decisions were made and are not expected to take place until January at the earliest and possibly after the Super Bowl.
Rooney said he expects three teams to apply to relocate. Negotiations with the current home markets could also delay the vote, Rooney and Grubman said. Chargers owner Dean Spanos has more than the nine votes needed to block Rams owner Stan Kroenke’s plans to relocate to a .86 billion stadium at Hollywood Park.
And why there are doubts either side will garner the necessary 24 votes to push its bid over the top. “If we’re going to win as one and we’re all in, how about Mr. Spanos how about you getting in on this?” We’ve got one in the crosshairs. “So guess what happened?”
An agreement to stage games in the United Kingdom through 2016 not only was extended, but other nations will be considered for global games. “Our relocation policy is very important”.
Vincent Bonsignore of the Los Angeles Daily News reported as much in a blog on Tuesday. “As owners, we have to look what’s best for (the NFL) and what makes the most sense and exactly who moves and where they move”. NFL executive vice president Eric Grubman later told reporters the league and owners are working toward a vote in January.
“We haven’t committed to any games in London, but it would be a big surprise to me if we went backward”, Waller said. “It’s hard to imagine taking a regular-season game to Australia or Asia or the Far East because how would you make the logistics work and then be competitive?”
