Google Adds ‘Block’ and ‘Unsubscribe’ Features to its Gmail Service
The features will be available on the web and over the next week on Android.
“That’s why you can now block specific email addresses in Gmail-starting today on the web, and over the next week on Android”.
The long-awaited option to block a sender on Gmail is on now.
NDTV Gadgets said that blocking someone does not mean reporting the blocked user’s messages as spam.
The block action can be undone in Gmail settings.
The Block feature will prevent any email from the sender to reach the users inbox. It does not hurt the reputation of that sender. “‘Report spam’, however, provides feedback to Gmail on the nature of the email and helps it improve its classification overall”. Whereas, the web version of the service however has the feature hidden in the drop-down menu of the reply button and a single click on the block button enables it.
Aside from the block option, an unsubscribe setting has been added for Gmail for Android. Android users of the Gmail app can now access an Unsubscribe option from the “More” icon (three dots in a vertical line) at the top-right corner of their device screen. In fact, Google has twice removed BrainTest from its app store, most recently in late August. The addition of this feature might appear unimportant to some but Google really needed to capitalize on this feature as alternative email services in the market have already had this for years.
E-mail can be annoying – and it’s not just spam.
Information Week reported that users can have better control of their Gmail accounts using a Chrome extension called Gmelius. It also features personalized hashtagging, Gmail searching from any tabs, and blocking email trailing mechanisms.
It’s unclear when Google will make this available for iPhone users – and do it without forcing e-mail users to download the Gmail app to get the benefits.
No news about these features to be added on ioS versions is out yet but we expect the company will not leave that platform out and will soon announce something.
