Google announces offers on pre-booking Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL
On paper, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have the best specs. Powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 4GB RAM and Android 8.0 Oreo, the phones pack 12.2MP lens with f/1.8 aperture, OIS and an 8MP front camera. And hundreds of thousands of people have purchased it. If you include the LG-made Pixel 2 XL that has been seeing all kinds of issues from OLED display problems to freakish clicking noises, LG is now one for eight. It comes with a 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Suddenly, hundreds of owners began discovering OLED burn-in issues.
Screen burn-in occurs when the same image stays on the display long enough and a ghost image remains, even when moving to another screen.
Whenever you view the screen at a tilted angle, you’ll see a blue tint or, put differently, cooler colors.
With any luck, the noise issues experienced with Google’s new handsets can be resolved with a simple software update. Note that the buyback will only apply if you upgrade your Pixel and Pixel XL to the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL. Google says that the smartphones incorporate the company’s approach to combine AI, hardware and software.
Apple is no stranger to problematic smartphone launches.
Another previous iPhone issue occurred with the release of iPhone 4, in 2010, when users of the new handset found that holding the smartphone in a certain way caused calls to drop out. Burn-in, which usually becomes a problem only after several years of activity, can make it hard to see information on the display.
Google’s latest offering is not a complete rethink but a refined, improved versions of last year’s original, adding a few features and removing a few as well.
You would think that Google would have learned their lesson last year and try to make sure that the Pixel 2 won’t be delayed this year but it looks like they did not because it looks like the new Pixel 2 is going to be late once more. You can pre-order here. The tech giant will sell the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL smartphones via online and offline channels. Only time will answer these questions.
Google in another release detailed offers for offline pre-orders, available at such participating offline retail partners as Reliance Digital and Croma.
You don’t want to spend close to $1,000 on a phone plagued by a series of problems.
YouTuber Kelly McWilliams shared his woes concerning the Pixel 2 XL. As The Verge points out, consumers are assuming that both the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have problems. Like the iPhone 8, Google’s phone has thin bezels at the side of the display, with thicker boarders at the top and bottom. As has been independently confirmed and reported by at least a half-dozen different news outlets, Samsung Display is the sole supplier of OLED panels for Apple’s upcoming iPhone X.
A Google spokesperson told Sky News the company was investigating the reports, and said that the screens for the Pixel phones used new POLED technology, with a plastic base layer rather than glass. A user has also recorded the clicking sound and has posted on the forum.
Google was trying to position the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL as an iPhone challenger. It is also worth recalling that independent camera testers, DXO, has rated the Pixel 2 camera as the best camera of any smartphone, with a score of 98.
