Google Chromecast adds streaming support for HBO Now and some other Apps
Now, finally, HBO Now supports Chromecast (as reported by Google). The support for Google’s Chromecast marks the second media player platform for HBO Now, following the dedicated app on the Apple TV.
Initially, HBO Now, which is a $14.99 streaming service, was exclusive to Apple.
You can purchase a Chromecast now from Amazon.com for $31.99. The only devices supported at launch were the iPad, Apple TV, iPhone and iPod touch.
Now you can stream HBO programs and movies to a Chromecast without paying for a cable or satellite subscription.
All you need to do is fire up the HBO Now app on your mobile device, find a video you want to watch, and tap the cast icon to send it to a TV with a Chromecast device connected. However, the service’s early few months were decidedly un-cord cutterish by not distributing HBO Now on multiple platforms. A new update is being rolled out for HBO Now on iOS and Android.
Google’s Chromecast is a great little invention and its popularity has done nothing but grow. HBO Go support is on all kinds of devices and it seems odd that HBO Now isn’t.
Other new apps include a couple games in the form of FitFlap and PhraseBlitz, as well as a mixed bag of others.
In addition to HBO Now, Chromecast has also added Travel Channel and Food Network, as well as kid-friendly content like Pokemon TV and interactive games from publishers MediaMonks and BreakFirst.
