Google Fiber Heads To San Francisco
Google Fiber (NASDAQ:GOOG, NASDAQ:GOOGL) will soon be in the Bay Area.
Google hasn’t confirmed yet where and when the service will be available in San Francisco and it hints that we might have to wait for a considerable amount of time before we find out these details. Google announced this morning that it intends to bring its fast gigabit internet to “a portion of San Francisco”, specifically to apartments, condos, and affordable housing units.
Google on Wednesday announced its latest upcoming Fiber city-San Francisco.
In thinking about how best to bring Google Fiber to some residents in this unique city, we considered a number of factors, including the City’s rolling hills, miles of coastline, and historic neighborhoods.
San Fran will become the 22nd named Fiber location and will tap into the city’s existing Fiber network, rather than benefit from a new infrastructure.
What Google Fiber does say is that it won’tbe building out its own network in San Francisco, as it’s done in many other cities. Tele-health applications could also see improved remote medical service, and enable older people to remain in their homes when previously they would have needed to move to assisted living, Hovis said. And so, Google Fiber is going to have to grow fast to outpace the competition.
Because Google is using existing fiber networks, the service could launch much more quickly compared to Google building out its own network.
Google is also testing equipment to deliver its Fiber service to consumers’ homes wirelessly, using the broadband 3.5Ghz frequency, as Business Insider reported last week.
