Google fires at Apple with Pixel 3 phone, other devices
Google has unveiled the new Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL smartphones.
“To think of a one-size-fits-all watch, I don’t think we’re there yet”, Barr said. When it’s not showing you a weather forecast or playing YouTube music videos, it’ll serve as a digital photo frame showing a carefully curated selection of your snaps saved in Google Photos. As a telemarketer talks to the phone, a live transcript pops up that you can follow along and answer if you want to. The Pixel 3 XL starts at $1,129 CAD for the 64GB and $1,259 for the 128GB. The Pixel 3 XL starts at $899 and tops out at $999 for the same amount of storage.
The accessory will wirelessly charge the flagship in addition to providing a host of new functionality. You can even get up to 16GB of RAM on the device, though you probably won’t need such a large amount of RAM on a Chromebook The device includes 8MP front facing and rear facing cameras, both of which include support for portrait mode. There are rumors that we may also see a 6GB RAM variant, but we will get more clarity only after the official announcement.
The Galaxy S9 is a little heftier at 147.7 x 68.7 x 8.5mm and 163 grams, compared to the Pixel 3’s 145.6 x 68.2 x 7.9mm and 148g. On the back of the phones is a 12.2MP 28mm f/1.8 (35mm equiv.) dual-pixel camera.
The main attraction, however, will be Google’s smartphone.
Should you decide to go with a Pixel, you can pre-order the phone right now. The company just had its annual hardware unveiling, and all three of its new devices leaked repeatedly in the lead-up to the event.
On one level they’re both nothing more than the latest iteration of Google’s popular Pixel smartphone. A recent report also suggested Google may be launching the device in India on October 22. When placed into the wireless charging stand, the Pixel’s UI changes to become readable from a distance.
Specifications wise, it’s exactly as we expected given the numerous leaks we’ve had surface over the previous months. But then there’s the Google Pixel Slate, Google’s newest tablet.
“Pixel 3 will be available from Verizon in two sizes: “the 5.5″ Pixel 3 and the 6.3” Pixel 3 XL, both available in 64 GB and 128 GB memory options. Google has created the $199 Pixel Slate keyboard. Lastly, there will also be a top end model with Intel Core 8500Y processor clocked at 4.2GHz.
Chrome OS makes the Pixel Slate more like an ultra-portable Chromebook than a tablet. The display has a resolution of 2960×1440, and it’s also OLED. On the glass back, there’s a fingerprint reader and one camera; on the front, there’s a notch in the screen to hide its front-facing cameras. It sees Google take a purposefully privacy-minded approach to smart displays, intentionally ignoring some of its key video calling products like Google Duo in the name of reassuring the paranoid who might not be comfortable with a connected camera in their home. During the event Google even discussed how Conde Nast was using Pixels to take professional photos for their magazines, which means they really are just that good, and there are several cool new features to talk about.
