Google Glass Could Display Holograms Over The Real World In The Future
This would be a big step forward to Google‘s first version of Glass, which shows 2D images and instructions in a person’s peripheral vision. According to Mashable Asia, “Google Glass” is Google’s effort to develop glasses that amplify or compliment reality.
The project has now been named Project Aura, though it is still being headed by Ivy Ross, who previously ran the Glass project, Wall Street Journal reported recently.
Google withdrew the eye wearable device from the market in January this year, but reports said that the U.S. tech giant was planning to come up with a different version of the wearable headset “when it’s ready”. According to Mashable, Google may be secretly distributing this to select companies in health care, manufacturing and energy industries.
Google has published a patent application for using holograms in a head mounted display like Google Glass, which could create augmented reality experiences that superimpose computer-generated imagery (CGI) over the real world. This could be the future of the current Google Glass, which still doesn’t feel so 3D for the user, meaning that Google Glass still surrounds you with flat pictures superimposed on a 3D world. You may see a few added depth in the future, though.
A few people are hopeful that Magic Leap’s augmented reality technology could be incorporated into Glass one day, but nothing has been confirmed and the patent may never become reality.
According to an e-mailed statement by a spokesman for Google, however, the company holds a variety of patents, with only a few of the ideas being able to be taken to market as real services or products.
For now, all these may seem to be early in the research and development phase.
