Google Play ups app size limit for devs from 50MB to 100MB
Google’s is giving developers a little more breathing room for their apps. This is definitely progress in the right direction, as mobile devices that run on the Android mobile operating system these days end up being more and more powerful, so much so that apps will need to be released in order to cater for the improvement in hardware.
Google today announced a big change for Android app APK files, doubling the maximum size that developers can upload.
It’s worth noting that although APK files downloaded from the Play Store were limited to 50MB, apps sometimes downloaded extra files to provide full functionality once installed.
“To support the growing number of developers who are building richer apps and games on Google Play, we are increasing the APK file size limit to 100MB from 50MB”. Users on a slow connection are less likely to install an app or game that is going to take a long time to download. With mobile data connectivity, mobile data caps, overall app performance and install time listed as caution areas, Google wants to make sure developers are using the increased file limitations for the correct reasons.
However, Google does warn developers that just because they can make apps bigger, doesn’t always mean they should. Particularly in developing countries, many people are coming online with connections slower than those of users in countries like the US and Japan.
