Google promises monthly Android security updates after getting the jolt of

Samsung noted that it has recently fast tracked security updates to its Galaxy devices due to the recent “Stagefright” issues. So far, though, Samsung and Google are about the only two to release patches.

In a blog Adrian Ludwig, Google’s lead engineer for Android security and Venkat Rapaka, director of Nexus product management, said the latest security update is now available for Nexus 4 through 10 devices, plus for Nexus Player.

Samsung, LG and Google have pledged to provide monthly security updates for smartphones running the Android operating system.

One issue often cited with Android is its security, and while that flaw may not be totally based in reality, it’s still a perception that a lot of consumers have.

In addition, it is said that the user will receive major OS updates for at least 2 years and security fixes for 18 months after your device leaves the Google Store or either 3 years after launch.

This terrifying flaw could allow hackers to crack into phones by sending a simple text message.

A Samsung VP commented that “developing a fast response process to deliver security patches to our devices is critical to keep them protected”. Nexus devices with numbers in the name will start receiving a Stagefright-related security update today. After being notified, It was then up to the manufacturers to implement fixes and dole them out – a sometimes tricky process when you have to deal with custom ROMs and wireless carriers.

It is understood that up to 95% of Android devices are vulnerable to Stagefright.

Interestingly, security firm Lookout has also released an app that helps users detect whether their device is infected with Stagefright, what appears to be the one of the biggest vulnerabilities on Android reported in the recent times.

‘These security updates will take place regularly about once per month.

BlackBerry’s software is reviewed by mobile networks before being sent to handsets, while Apple can push updates to its phones whenever it wants.
